![]() Did everyone see this Season 3 deleted scene between Pycelle and Tywin? In addition to convincing us (if we still needed convincing) that Tywin is a Westeros version of Ron Swanson, we get a more fleshed out idea of the character Pycelle has created for himself, which was also hinted at after his scene with Ros in the Season 1 finale. Pycelle’s spying on Tyrion for Cersei in Season 2 aside, the guy is clearly up to something. Just because Tyrion raided his belongings after throwing him in a jail over a year ago doesn’t mean that Tyrion used those same poisons to murder Joffrey. Where Ser Meryn’s testimony technically told the truth while omitting important details, Pycelle’s becomes straight up accusatory without much reason or evidence. The second testimony is, again, someone we already knew was under Cersei’s thumb and who we already had reason to mistrust. If the writers wanted us to feel like Tyrion’s trial was unfair from the moment it began, starting with this guy was definitely a good call. His testimony falls under the classic “technically true but completely unfair” category, as he recounts the time Tyrion insulted Joffrey and threatened his own precious self while conveniently leaving out the point that they were in the middle of beating and stripping Sansa at the time. It’s completely unsurprising that Meryn Fucking Trant (as the Hound so affectionately calls him) would testify against Tyrion: he was always doing Joffrey’s bidding, and wasn’t a fan of Tyrion, and has a Janos Slynt-like penchant for doing whatever he’s told even (and especially?) if it’s a shitty thing to do. If Arya only gets to kill one person on her to-kill list, I would want it to be Meryn. I will not stop talking about this, because I hate this guy. I’ve been thinking a lot about Tyrion’s trial (unsurprisingly), and I think it’s worth it to go through the five witnesses against him one at a time. Quite the opposite – manipulation is just twisting someone’s motives so that they act for you and for themselves at the same time. The witnesses at Tyrion’s trial were presumably also manipulated by Cersei but just because someone is manipulated doesn’t mean they have no motives of their own. We get to see how she tries to win the three judges to her favor in “First Of His Name”: she brings Mace Tyrell into her camp with the promise that Margaery will become queen, she appeals to Oberyn’s desire for vengeance after losing a loved one, and she makes the case to Tywin that Tyrion has ruined his work for a Lannister dynasty. I'm disappointed. Before Tyrion’s trial even starts in “The Laws of Gods and Men,” we know the entire thing has been manipulated by Cersei. Why did you come treat with me?īlackfish: Sieges are dull, and I wanted to see you in person, get the measure of you.īlackfish: Aye, now I have. Jaime: You clearly have no intention of saving your men's lives. So you can either attack, or try to starve us out. I was born in this castle, and I'm ready to die in it. Why sacrifice living men to a lost cause?īlackfish: As long as I'm standing, the war is not over. But if you surrender, I'll spare the lives of your men, on my honor.īlackfish: Your "honor." Bargaining with oath-breakers is like building on quicksand. Jaime: We'll breach them, and kill every last one of you. Hundreds will die.īlackfish: Hundreds of mine. My nephew's marked for death no matter what. In the name of King Tommen, I order you to surrender, or.īlackfish: Or you'll kill Edmure. Do you wish to resume your captivity? Then why are you here? I don't see Sansa and Arya.īlackfish: Pity. I intend to serve as Hand of the King until my father returns from the war, and seeing as you betrayed the last Hand of the King, well I just wouldn't feel safe with you lurking about.īlackfish: I assume you're here to fulfill the vow you gave my niece. Unless you'd like to take it from my friend here. And yes, you will stand here and take it from me. Tyrion: "Dwarf." Hmm, you should've stopped at imp. Janos Slynt: If you think I'll stand here and take this from you, dwarf. Tyrion: I'm not questioning your honor, Lord Janos. Janos Slynt: Are you drunk!? I'll not have my honor questioned by an imp! Tell me, when your men slaughtered Ned Stark's men in the Throne Room, did you give the order? Janos Slynt: Joffrey is my king, the rest doesn't interest me. I suppose people who do believe that filth consider Robert's bastards to be better claimants to the throne than Cersei's children. Tyrion: That's good of you, but you have heard them. Tyrion: You've heard the awful rumors about my brother and sister. Janos Slynt: You know your sister better than I do. Tyrion: No, but who else would want to murder King Robert's bastards? She's always been a jealous woman. Janos Slynt: I never said they were the Queen's orders. Only, I hadn't realised peace depended on killing babies. Tyrion: I heard there was some trouble in Littlefinger's brothel the other night. ![]()
